Rev. Matthew Gunia, Pastor—first pastor of Ascension Lutheran Church.
Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.
Growing up in Chicago, Pastor Gunia attended Messiah Lutheran Church and School and Luther High School North in Chicago. He graduated from Northeastern Illinois University with a double major in Secondary Education and History. After a brief career teaching middle school, he attended Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, graduating with a Masters of Divinity in 2006.
Pastor Gunia’s vicarage (internship) was split between congregations in Cincinnati, Ohio, and O’Fallon, Missouri. He served pastorates in Burr Ridge, Westchester, and Lyons, Illinois before accepting a call to serve St. John Lutheran Church in Niles in 2012, which continues on as St. John merged with Our Savior Lutheran Church in Norwood Park in 2015.
Pastor Gunia married Kathleen (nee Hagen) in 2003. They have been blessed with three children—Joey (6), Colette (5), and Vivian (2). Pastor and Kathy are presently homeschooling their children.
Pastor Gunia’s main emphasis is his personal prayer and devotional life. He enjoys visiting with members in their homes, conducting regular worship services at nearby Glenbridge Rehabilitation Facility, and helping Ascension’s boards and committees in their work. In his free time, Pastor Gunia enjoys running (he competes in several races in the course of a year), reading, and following the Chicago Cubs.
